Compared to Others

I have a bad habit of comparing myself to others. I know that this behavior isn’t healthy. I know that I am God’s child. I know that I am created in His image. Why do I compare myself to others? I don’t know. My self- esteem has always been a little on the low side, but I feel like I’ve grown a lot over the years. I know that He surrounds me on all sides every day. Satan roams around constantly looking for an opportunity to slither in and drag us down. God gives me grace and direction each morning I wake up. He’s got my day planned and He knows exactly what’s in front of me. There’s no need for me to worry and concern myself with what I think others may be doing better than me. God wants me to do what He’s called me to do. When I concern myself with feeling inadequate towards others, I’m not being dependent on God. I’m letting Satan sneak in and chew down my self-esteem. Ephesians 2:10 – “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

I work with a few individuals who are younger and stronger and can run circles around me. I am very grateful for these people because I certainly can’t do the things I used to do. God wants us to realize our own strengths and talents and not compare ourselves to others. Each one of us contribute something. When we waste time with envy or wishing we could keep up with someone else, we miss what God has in store for us to do. I am finding that by keeping my mind on God, and staying focused where He has me at the moment, I am less likely to be concerned about measuring up to someone else. Galatians 6:4-5 – “Each of you must examine your own actions. Then you can be proud of your accomplishments without comparing yourself to others. Assume your own responsibility.”

Galatians 1:10 ESV
For am I now seeking the approval of man, or God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Galatians 6:4 NLT
Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else.

Romans 12:12 ESV
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

About Rita:
“The breakthrough point for when my faith in God really started to grow was in 2000-2001. Through a series of trampled relationships, I turned my focus to God. I love reading, walking, and playing challenging word games. I have a beautiful daughter who lives in Florida, and my vacation time is spent with her. I have learned that having a Christ-centered life settles my anxieties and truly opens the door to God’s plan for me.”
